along the silk road
bukhara, land of weavers
Vera Rustam, our partner in Uzbekistan, along with her family, have been in the textile industry for generations. In her hometown of Bukhara, she teams up with the most talented artisans to showcase and promote their craft. This city is one of the cradles of ikat weaving. For centuries sultans and nobles had their silks made here. From the traditional chapan or robe, to the panels of radiant ikat hanging from the palace walls, Bukhara supplied what was considered the best. And it still is.
the art of tying the clouds
ikat silk
In Uzbekistan, Ikat fabric is called abr, a Persian term meaning cloud, and “abr-bandi” or "cloud-tying", refers to the ikat’s characteristic cloud-like pattern.
Requiring more than 30 steps in its elaboration, between collecting the silk, spinning the thread, dyeing & washing, and finally weaving, ikat silk offers an incomparable finesse and quality. Radiant yet elegant, soft yet sturdy, the real jewel from the Silk Road.
